Montreal, 1936, 2 teenage brothers named Ben and Joe had an obsession with the pursuit of the perfect physique. They spent hours upon hours doing basic exercises trying to develop their musculature, building weight sets out of basic metal parts. Their goal was simple, to show the world the amazing lengths that the human body could be taken to, and how to take it there. But how would they do it? They decided to publish “Your Physique” magazine.
Little did these teenagers with the last name Weider know that that this decision would change the lives of every single person reading this newsletter right now. Their passion for physical culturism led them to create the IFBB in 1946 which is the Mount Olympus of our sport, where the athlete’s strive for Greek god like physiques to reach the top of the bodybuilding ranks. One of the biggest events in this federation is The Toronto Pro Show. It has been Canada’s biggest bodybuilding show since 1995, where it was originally held in the birth city of modern bodybuilding, Montreal. Where the great Ronnie Coleman was the first winner and the only event was Men’s Bodybuilding. Throughout the last 20 years, the event has moved around and is now held in the great city of Toronto. It has grown into the biggest health and fitness expo held in Canada every year. The list of events has grown substantially to include all the current events held in the IFBB, from Men’s Open, 212 bodybuilding and physique, all the way to Women’s fitness, bikini, figure, physique and bodybuilding. This year it is with great excitement that we also get to see IFBB Wheelchair bodybuilding for the first time at the Supershow, one of the fastest growing classes in the IFBB. After taking a 3 year hiatus in 2008, it has been held steadily in Toronto from 2011, and it continues to exponentially grow to new limits each year. It has gone from merely a few booths at the expo with a small amount of events, to over 100 booths and over 18 events occurring this year! Apart from seeing these top professionals battle it out in the arena, we also get to have one of the biggest events for the Ontario Physique Association during this amazing weekend, the Ontario Provincial Championships. Our OPA athletes have worked so hard every single day of the year, with every single workout, every single set, every single rep and every drop of blood, sweat and tears to come on this stage and showcase their physiques. This is a huge stepping stone for many of the athletes, as it is the path that must be taken in order to advance and one day be able to be part of this weekend as a professional standing amongst their idols. Each year the OPA puts on an amazing show, and it gets bigger and bigger as the competition gets steeper and steeper. This year we are expecting a huge turnout with over 400 athletes from across the province. The amazing expo is something also worth checking out, here you can meet and talk to all your favourite top IFBB professionals, and fitness icons. This experience is unbelievable, and the knowledge and inspiration to be gained from these amazing athlete’s all in one room is unlike any other experience imaginable. Athlete’s and legends at the very top of their sport like Kai Greene, Ronnie Coleman and Nicole Wilkins will be holding private seminars which tickets can be purchased at www.torontoprosupershow.com. These seminars will be on training, dieting and the lifestyle of this beautiful sport where we all pursuit having the perfect physique. And who better to learn from than the ones that are where many of us want to be? The TorontoPro Supershow also has another component that many don’t know and that they do not brag about as much as they should. They are extremely proud to give back to our community; they are key supporters of: - The Sick kid’s fitness challenge, where contributions go to the Sick Kid’s Hospital Foundation. - The Endangered Species Jungle Cat World, who are helping to protect, restore and conserve the many plants and animals we share this planet with. - Days Of Inspiration, where celebrities of our sports share inspirational talks helping those overcome insurmountable life tragedies. Behind the hype of muscle, beauty, strength and extreme sport challenges, The TorontoPro Supershow has really been mindful of how important it is to give back. They have also partnered with the Toronto Police Service at Regent Park 51 Division. Thanks to this, free passes are allotted to the police department to give to children from this community of low income housing, in which throughout the years, it has unfortunately faced many challenges ranging from social break down to criminal and gang activity. These kids have an opportunity to become inspired at the TorontoPro Supershow and befriend police officers who are donating their time to be there with them. In the expo hall, a numerous amount of events are also held like the Inside fitness Model search, crossfit events, professional wrestling, gymnastics, boxing, weightlifting, strongman, and powerlifting; just to name a few. It is incredible seeing these athletes performing feats of strength and agility that many of us can only dream of, like car deadlifts and circus dumbbell presses. It is a very inspiring and entertaining environment where the whole family is welcome to come and enjoy. So make sure you don’t miss this incredible event in Toronto on June 6th and 7th. Tickets for many of the events can be purchased at the venue, but it is always a good idea to get them in advance at www.torontoprosupershow.com, here you can also find more information on specific times and details of the events. This is an event that sets new records each year, as this beautiful sport of physical culturism has evolved into bodybuilding, this event keeps evolving into what is one of the biggest gatherings in Canadian Sports weekends.
